The performing arts have a place in Amsterdam as well with many theatres promoting classical and contemporary performances.

Beurs van Berlage
This is home to the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra performances, when they are in town. Damrak 213 (020 521 7520)

Boom Chicago Theater
This theatre hosts comedy improvisations from many international comedy acts and troupes. Leidsepleintheater, Leidseplein 12 (020 423 0101)

Concertgebouw
There are some wonderful acoustics here and there are classical music performances held here most nights. Concertgebouwplein 2-6 (020 671 8345)

Melkweg
Once a diary, now it house all sorts of unusual, contemporary and new age performances. A great place to catch something very different, and often the performances are free of charge. Lijnbaansgracht 234A (020 531 8181).

Muziekgebouw aan't IJ
This is Amsterdam's newest music venue and is an impressive piece of modern architecture. Music of all genres. theatre performances, plays and musicals are all staged here. Piet Heinkade 1 (020 788 2000)

Muzziest
Some of the Netherlands most prestigious opera and ballet companies perform at this venue. Waterlooplein (020 625 5455)

Stadsschouwburg
Mostly Dutch plays are performed here as well as music and dance performances. Leidseplein 26 (020 624 2311)

Theatre Carre
This impressive structure houses opera and operetta performances and can be found on the east bank of the Amstel River. Amstel 115-125 (0900 252 5255)
