First of all, it is not fun to be with somebody when they are going through detox. Second, it makes me kick myself for doing all of the co-dependent things they tell you NOT to do. You are enabling if you bring him food in bed because he’s too sick to get out. You are enabling when you change your schedule to meet his. But the paranoia of what he does when you are not around drives you crazy. Is he sneaking out at night when you are asleep and getting drugs? Is he stealing from you and/or others in the hostel to fund his habit?
No, I would recommend assessing you and your travel partner’s relationship with drugs before heading to Amsterdam. Along with the legal and regulated drugs, there’s a plethora of illegal and easily obtainable ones. Otherwise, you will end up like me, tearing out pages of your journal to write a “Dear John” letter, vowing to never come back to Amsterdam and cursing the day you ever decided to bring the loser you were dating there to just make you more miserable.
The best part is that I believe it took this experience to cut him out of my life entirely and emerge stronger then ever. |
