Amsterdam nightlife

Nightlife is big in Amsterdam, and the city prides itself as catering for all types of evening entertainment. Amsterdam touts itself to be the gay capital of Europe so there are many venues that cater for the gay scene. Young locals and the backpacker set love the clubs, discos and pubs so there are plenty of choices along those lines as well. And of course the 'Smoking Cafes'' offer the laid back vibe that the thousands of Hashish smokers come to Amsterdam to experience.

The bigger more popular venues and acts charge a cover charge but there are a lot of venues in Amsterdam that offer free entry.

A lot of the bars and cafes are centered around Leidseplein and Rembrantplein. Most clubs are open from Thursday until Sunday, they don't start jumping until at last 9 or 10pm and usually close up around 3 to 5 am.

Amsterdam Weekly is an English-language free cultural weekly published every Wednesday. It provides coverage of Amsterdam city life, and an arts and entertainment calendar. Uitkrant is a free monthly magazine with concerts, exhibitions and what to do in Amsterdam . OOM! is published 4 times a year with ideas on restaurants and a guide to the red light district.

Bimhuis
This is Amsterdam's premier entertainment club for blues and Jazz lovers. Local and international acts play here on a regular basis. Piet Heinkade 3 (020 788 2188)

Bourban Street
This bar is popular for late night blues and rock acts and get pretty crowded by locals and visitors. Leidsekruisstraat 6-8 (020 623 3440)

Club Zygon
This large dance floor fills up pretty quickly on weekends and the music is a mix of techno, hip hop and R & B. Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 161 (020 427 5961)

This club has theme nights, with disco and Dj's being the main form of entertainment. Rozengracht 133

Power Zone
