Flying Pig Hostel

Went to the Flying Pig Hostel Uptown. The Flying Pig has 3 hostels in Amsterdam with similar offerings – a smoker-friendly bar, clean rooms and friendly helpful staff. I had the bottom bunk bed in a room in the basement, just outside the bar. This particular hostel offers a queen bunk bed as well in this room. The en suite bathroom in my room smells like a sewer. It's so bad, there is a stock of air freshener in the bathroom. I gag when somebody opens the door. Since it's basement level, and there isn't a vent for the shower, it's probably why it stinks so much. I’ve been to other rooms in the hostel, and none of them smell like this one. The rooms have lockers, which makes me feel better about leaving my bags in the room.

Having a bar in the hostel makes a lot of sense. To me at least. The bar “closes” very early in the morning so the staff can clean up and prepare for breakfast. The “chill out” area is actually a stage in the pub with pillows on the floor. It’s a good place to relax and meet some new friends.

The hostel breakfast is simple: 3 slices of bread or one slice and a roll, 3 jams, a hard boiled egg, and coffee or tea. It’s not that great, but it’s at least something.

The hostel doesn’t have a lock-out. However, they do have one on a day the week after the Cannabis cup (in late November). They remove all of the beds and spray all of the rooms for roaches, rats and bed bugs. I was told that they do this once a year and I just happened to pick the one day they do it. It’s not too bad, they gave me enough advanced warning that I was able to spend the day sightseeing and come back to a louse free bed.
