Amsterdam is a city with many reputations, you might want to decide which one you are there to experience as you choose where you stay. The Red Light District ( Rossebuurt in Dutch) is famous for its debauchery and sometimes dangerous excitement, but it can be a perfectly tame place to enjoy your stay in the world's most liberal city.
For those visiting the city on a tight budget, there are many "budget hotels" available to you, the only trouble is finding one that is close to everything that made you want to visit the city in the first place.
For around $20 you can enjoy a night at the Amsterdam Hostel Centre. The Centre is centrally located in the heart of the city in the
Leidseplein area that is famous for its nightlife while being minutes away from the daylife. Nearby is the world famous van Gogh Museum, the fun and relaxing
Vondelpark , the Anne Frank House, many coffee shops, bars and restaurants, and the famously adventurous Red Light District.
Some people might balk at the notion of staying
in the Red Light District, preferring instead to sleep in parts of the city that are less tolerant of prostitution and the blatant peddling of narcotics, but most of the dangers that come with such things can be avoided by using common sense and by staying respectful. If such a risk sounds perfect for you, the Bulldog Hotel is a great hostel that is right in the Red Light District. Because of its controversial location, the staff at the Bulldog is well versed in coaching their guests on how to enjoy the nightlife in a safe way. One thing they suggest is for you to learn the streets of the Red Light District during the more tame daylight hours to avoid getting lost when and if you decide to brave the streets at night. The Bulldog itself is a laid back establishment (no surprise there) that has wide screen TVs and a movie lounge for those tired nights. Although the Bulldog starts at a fairly steep $37, you can be certain of an exciting and indulgent experience in the city.
Another option would be either one of the Flying Pigs, Downtown or Uptown. The Uptown location is situated between the museum and fashion district and is near the
Leidseplein area as well. Right outside the doors of the Flying Pig Uptown is the
Vondelpark , something that the staff suggests as being one of the absolute best ways to enjoy the freedom and friendliness of the city with friends both old and new. For staying in or starting out the night, the hostel has its own bar that serves some of the cheapest beer in town.
