Bikes are everywhere here.
I read somewhere that there are more bikes than cars in Amsterdam I can believe it. When you're crossing the street, you need to look out first for bikes. Then cars. Then trams. The buses seem to have laws that only apply to them, so you have to look out for them too. Then I was run over by a guy running as fast as he could.

I saw more than one person running, and it wasn't recreational. I've already seen several bike accidents. Amsterdam used to have a few bike services where you could just pick up a bike anywhere and ride it for free. They had a problem with kids throwing the bikes into the channels so they stopped offering bikes for free.
You can, however, rent a bike from several locations throughout Amsterdam. It is an ideal way to get around the city. The Trams are a little confusing but are a very efficient way to get around. You can buy tickets on board at a higher price.
Occasionally, you can get by without having to pay for a ticket if you’re going a short distance on a crowded train. Don’t count on this though and always have the money to pay. The stops are read in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. |
