Amsterdam eating tips

Unlike Great Britain, there aren't a lot of choices for breakfast in Amsterdam.   If your hostel or hotel has a breakfast, I would recommend getting up early so you don’t miss it.   Even if it is only juice and toast, it’s still more than what you’ll find by going out.   Most stores and restaurants are closed early in the morning.   You’ll also find that a lot of stores will only take cash.   If your ATM only dispenses 50 EUR, try to break it up quickly.   Store owners don’t like to break big bills.

My favorite place is a cheese shop called Kassland (Haarlemmerstraat 2).   You can find any kind of cheese here.   My favorite is a sun dried tomato and basil cheese.

Amsterdam has a variety of restaurants in the “Leidse Plein” area.   Some of the best Thai food I’ve ever eaten was in this area.   Dinner can be more on the expensive side, so if there’s a restaurant you want to try out, go there for lunch.   It will be the same food for often times half the price.   You’ll be hard pressed to find any Dutch restaurants.   This area caters more to the tourist who is looking for international flavors.
